Some City Of Pittsburgh Services Disrupted After New COVID-19 Cases Reported

16 cases are reported among Public Safety and Public Works employees

    PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Pittsburgh Public Works and Public Safety are reporting 16 cases of COVID-19 among employees.

    Due to the positive cases and other injuries, the city has said that there have been disruptions of some city services including the collection of recycling in parts of the East End.

    Several neighborhoods reported missing recycling and trash collection due to limited staff.

    The city is also reporting an increase in the amount of trash that is being collected due to more people staying at home.

    “In April, environmental services reported an increase of 506.9 tons of solid waste (8,522.56 tons total) and 40.08 tons of recycling (1,280.04 tons total) compared to April 2019,” the city said in a statement.

    “We appreciate our residents’ patience as we prioritize the health and safety of our frontline workers,” Mayor William Peduto said. “Our staff in Environmental Services and Public Safety are constantly out working in the field and are more vulnerable to exposure to the coronavirus and potential injury. We will continue to take precautions for their safety on the job to avoid the spread of illness to other staff or the public.”  

    Environmental services is reporting two employees missing work due to a positive COVID-19 test, five are off due to heat-related health issues or illness and 15 other employees are off with “other injuries.”

    Public Safety is reported seven police officers, five fire employees and two Emergency Medical Services employees are infected with coronavirus.
