3-Million Dollar Economic Boost to McKeesport

Housing, Downtown Development, and Tourism to Benefit

McKEESPORT (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - "It's an exciting day for the city of McKeesport." The evaluation of Mayor Michael Cherepko to the state Department of Community and Economic Development delivering $3 million to boost housing, downtown development and tourism.

Much of the money will go to renovate 20 owner-occupied houses and rehab five other houses for resale.

Cherepko says it will, "help stabilize some of the neighborhoods as far as keeping current homeowners through Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh." 

Funding will also go to acquire and demolish blighted downtown commercial properties and renovate the Penn-McKee Hotel.

"If we can get to the point where we can restore that and really turn that into something, I think it's really going to open up people's eyes in so many ways," said Cherepko.

DCED Secretary Dennis Davin and state Senator Jim Brewster joined Cherepko in announcing the six year redevelopment strategy.
