PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Leaders in the African American community are calling on the state attorney general to take over the investigation into the East Pittsburgh Police shooting death of 17-year-old Antwon Rose Jr.

The Black Political Empowerment Project and the Greater Pittsburgh Coalition Against Violence say that Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala should not be involved in the investigation because of a conflict.

The organizations say Zappala has to work with local police departments like East Pittsburgh and other local police to prosecute offenders and that creates a conflict of interest.

Time Stevens, who heads B-PEP, has written Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro to take over.

Stevens says the African American community is outraged. “There is no reason for this death other than somebody felt a black life did not matter.”

B-PEP is calling for a county wide citizen’s police review board similar to the one in the city of Pittsburgh.

Stevens asks, “How is such an action justified? Why did this officer feel the need or the right?”

Mike Manko, Communications director and chief spokesperson for the Allegheny County’s district attorney’s office, released the following statement Thursday:

“District Attorney Zappala met this morning with Allegheny County Police Superintendent Coleman McDonough and Lt. Andy Schurman and received a detailed and thorough briefing on the officer involved shooting in East Pittsburgh that resulted in the death of Antwon Rose.  The investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Out of respect for the grieving process that the family and friends of Mr. Rose are going through and the upcoming Monday funeral for Mr. Rose, District Attorney Zappala will not have any further comment until next week.”
