Albert Lexie, UPMC Children’s Charitable Shoe Shiner, Passes At 76

Lexie donated over $202,000 in tips to the hospital's Free Care Fund

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — Albert Lexie, the long-time shoe shine man at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, passed away Tuesday.

Lexie offered shines every Tuesday and Thursday for over 30 years, donating the tips to the hospital's Free Care Fund. He commuted by bus an hour and a half both ways to do so. Lexie donated over $202,000 to the cause.

In a statement, Children's Hospital says Albert “represented the true spirit of volunteerism and philanthropy.”

Lexie received several awards over the decades for his years of charity work. He was honored as one of 30 “All Stars Among Us” by Major League Baseball and People magazine in 2010, received the 2006 National Caring Award given by the Caring Institute, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Caring Americans.

Lexie was from Monessen. He was 76.
