PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority will be hosting its 16th Annual Open House on Saturday, September 15th.

Joey Vallarian, Director of Communication at Alcosan, joined KDKA Radio on Friday to talk about the event and why they have one.

Why do you have an open house every year?

"To show people the importance of why Alcosan is there and the work that we do in taking all of the sewage and storm water from the 83 communities that serve, cleaning it, and putting it back into the Ohio River,” Vallarian said.

What is the attraction?

“We've got over 50 exhibitors there. It's good for anybody that is remotely interested in this. You can learn all types of things about keeping water clean and the process that we use to treat sewage,” Vallarian tells KDKA Radio.

Will there be fish from the Ohio River?

“It's a huge aquarium. It's owned by a company called Orsanco. They actually go out and catch the native fish that live in the Ohio River, and put them in the aquarium,” Vallarian said to KDKA Radio.

“People can see them up close and personal, and see what lives in our rivers.”

Will there be food?

“Hamburgers, Veggie burgers, hot dogs. Our people are very proud of their job for cooking every year,” Vallarian tells Larry and John.

“This is all free too. If you’re looking for something to do, it’s supposed to be a nice day, come out. We'd love to have you and show you the great work that we do for Allegheny County.”

Does it smell?

“You would be very surprised when you get there, that there is very little, if any odor,” said Vallarian to KDKA Radio.

What is the biggest draw?

“The tour of the plant,” said Vallarian.

“We do those throughout the day and people are really surprised by the process that sewage and storm water go's through before it gets put back into the river.”
