PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald tells KDKA Radio the area is heading in the right direction in the fight against coronavirus.

“I think there is no question we have flattened the curve,” said Fitzgerald. “Over the last couple of weeks we have seen the cases continue to come down. We had a little uptick on Saturday, but I think from what (the health department) said it was just more tests coming in.”

Allegheny County has also remained in the single digits when it comes to the percentage of the population that has tested positive compared to other areas in the state and country that have had percentages in the teens and higher.

On Monday, only seven new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Allegheny County. It’s the first time in a month the county has reported a single digit increase.

Fitzgerald now says the question is how do we return to some sort of normal life?

Late last week, Governor Tom Wolf announced a plan to restart Pennsylvania’s economy, but gave no timetable.

Fitzgerald believes that there could an announcement this week of when things could slowly begin to return to some form of normal.

LISTEN: Rich Fitzgerald believes Allegheny County has "Flattened the Curve" in coronavirus fight.

Fitzgerald says for example when it comes to restaurants, when they are allowed to serve dine-in customers again tables will likely need to be separated more than they currently are.

“You’re not going to be 100 percent on May 1 or May 15 or June 1, it’s going to be a slow unraveling back to some normalcy,” added Fitzgerald.

While there is no exact date, Fitzgerald admits that shuttered businesses do need a date they can look forward to so they can start plans to reopen.
