PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020, KDKA) - New ground has been broken for an Allegheny Health Network hospital, set to open in Wexford, Pennsylvania.

Allegheny Health Network Wexford Hospital will be connected to the Allegheny Health Network Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion on Route 19.

On Wednesday, President of the Allegheny Health Network Wexford Hospital, Dr. Allan Klapper, joined KDKA Radio to tell listeners about the hospital and its mission.

“We’re closer for patients to home. So they don’t have to travel great distances to get the care that they need,” Dr. Klapper said.

This way, individuals can make it to the hospital a lot faster. No more sitting in traffic to go downtown.

There will only be 160 beds at this hospital, and then another 24 emergency room beds.

It may seem small, but it allows for a more personal experience. Health professionals can focus on everyone. Patients do not see as much attention at a regular hospital because they are so populated. Klapper tells KDKA Radio,

“A lot of what we’re doing with the hospital is really focusing on an experience that's centered around the patient with compassion and empathy that ensures outstanding quality and outstanding experience for our patients.” He continued,

“Data proves, we’ve done lots of research in these areas to show that the outcomes are really as good if not better.”

There is always potential risk when being in a hospital. A person is exposed to all of the germs inside the facility.

A smaller hospital will get patients home sooner and away from any harmful bacteria.

The Wexford Hospital is set to open in 2021.
