PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Senator Elizabeth Warren all spoke during the American Federation of Teachers Convention at the David L Lawrence Convention Center over the weekend.

President of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers, Nina Esposito-Visgitis, joined KDKA Radio on Monday to talk about what happened at the convention.

She says the event was well attended.

“We have 3,500 of our members from across the country, as well as about 60 international guests and union member from across the world," Esposito-Visgitis said.

She said the conference focused on the success they have had and the problems they continue to face.

“We have had a great session talking about the direction of our union and the direction of our country. We talked about a lot of the great progress we have made and a lot of the challenges we face in public education.” She continued,

“But I think a lot of it has been to lift ourselves up and we know we are going to keep going and working together as a union, and for the good of our students in public education.”

Esposito-Visgitis says the biggest challenges they face are with taxes and funding for education

On Saturday, demonstrations took place to show city officials more funding is needed for public education.

“We had an enormous rally in downtown Pittsburgh where we had community partners join our delegates to march through downtown Pittsburgh to say we want more funding for public education.”Esposito-Visgitis added.

The convention also raised money for the children of Puerto Rico, who are still recovering from last year’s hurricane.

“We raised well over $7,200 dollars over the past four days to give to kids for school supplies and water purification,” Esposito-Visgitis said.

The convention takes place every two years.
