PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — Looking for some new sunglasses? Jewelry? How about a bright yellow firetruck? It’s all up for sale at the annual Pittsburgh International Airport auction.

Items abandoned at the airport over the year will be auctioned off, including vehicles and electronics.

The strangest item? A 2,500-page English to Vietnamese dictionary.

“It weighs about five pounds,” the Allegheny County Airport Authority’s Matt Neistein told KDKA Radio’s John Shumway.

“I can’t imagine why somebody was toting that through the airport but we’ve got it, and whoever left it behind didn’t come looking for it.”

Vehicles left for more than 45 days in airport lots are towed to storage. The airport authority and county police attempt to contact owners before escalating it to the state.

“The state tries to track down the last registered owner,” Neistein said.

“Sometimes they can’t, sometimes they can and the person just says ‘keep it.’”

Neistein says often times fees are in the thousands by the time contact is made with the vehicles’ owners.

More than a dozen personal vehicles are up for bid this year, along with heavy equipment trucks no longer needed by the authority including a bomb truck.

More than 1,000 pieces of jewelry and countless sunglasses will be sold by the lot.

The airport authority donated 35 boxes of clothing to Greater Circles Pittsburgh ahead of the auction.

The auction is tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Heavy Equipment Building on Cargo Rd.

Directions to Auction: Follow Business Loop I-376 to Hangar Road; turn left at the traffic light toward Airport Maintenance Facilities; at next intersection turn left on to Cargo Road and follow to top of hill. Airport Authority employees will direct attendees to parking location.
