Attorney Eric Chaffin, of the plaintiffs-only law firm Chaffin Luhana LLP in Pittsburgh, is advocating for change on an issue greatly affecting Americans and Western Pennsylvania today: the rise of auto accidents caused by distracted drivers.

This issue affects human safety and Chaffin Luhana believes that the actions taken now will lead to saving lives in the future.

Distracted Driving: Empowering Students to End Distracted Driving

Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens with fatality rates nearly three times that of any other age group. Distraction is now believed to contribute to more than 50% of those teen crashes.

Determined to end these senseless tragedies, Chaffin Luhana is sharing again this year its Anti-Distracted Driving Program with Pittsburgh high school students to discuss how we can work together to make driving distracted no longer acceptable.

This Program is part of a nation-wide campaign in partnership with End Distracted Driving and the American Association for Justice (AAJ).

The NHTSA defines distracted driving as “any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system—anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.”

Recognizing the danger and committed to doing something about it, members of Chaffin Luhana will meet with high school students to discuss how even seconds of distraction can result in catastrophic consequences. The presentations will take place throughout the month of April, which is Distracted Driving Awareness month.

The Program is designed to not only raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving, but to provide communication techniques for students if they are ever in the car with a distracted driver.

The Chaffin Luhana Foundation is also offering a $2,500 scholarship in an essay contest geared towards Greater Pittsburgh area students sharing their distracted driving experiences and ideas on how we can eliminate distracted driving.
