Dozens of cats and dogs are lucky to be alive, after police rescued them from an animal shelter dangerously close to the California wildfires.

Tense body cam footage shows Vacaville Police, staff and volunteers rushing in to get the animals out of the building.

The SPCA location appeared to be threatened by the Nelson fire, which burned through more than 2,000 acres in northern parts of the state, before being contained.

Police say their furry friends spent the night in foster homes but are all safe and now back in the shelter.
