March 15, 2018 - 6:28 pm

MIAMI, FL (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – A brand new, 950-ton pedestrian bridge collapsed onto a highway in Miami Thursday afternoon, killing 6 and injuring 10.

The slabs crushed eight vehicles around 1:30 p.m. Ten people were transported to local hospitals before search and rescue efforts got underway.

“The main focus is to rescue people.” said Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez. “As soon as those efforts are over, our homicide bureau will take the lead.”

The $14.2 million, 174-foot span was completed Saturday connecting the Florida International University (FIU) campus and the city of Sweetwater, FL. It was not yet open to foot traffic.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and Governor Rick Scott made their way to the scene.

The bridge utilized a newer “accelerated bridge construction” method, meant to reduce risk to workers and pedestrians.

“FIU is about building bridges and student safety. This project accomplishes our mission beautifully,” FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg said in a statement Saturday for the completion of the bridge.
