Elizabeth Township (Newsradio KDKA 1020) - Bunola River Road has reopened after a landslide caused its closure in 2018.

PennDOT in District 11 has announced the official reopening of Bunola River Road on Wednesday, February 19.

Bunola River Road services areas in Elizabeth and Forward Townships, Elizabeth Borough, and West Elizabeth.

The road was initially closed in June 2018 after a landslide occurred between Pangburn Hollow Road and Regina Drive.

Temporary traffic lights were originally installed to control the traffic, but the road was shut down altogether in December 2018.

A reopening ceremony was held on Wednesday morning after the completion of the reconstruction to usher in the installation of permanent traffic lights.

With the road usable again by vehicles, State Senator Jim Brewster, who was present for the ceremony, had this to say:

“My thanks to the leadership of the local PennDOT district office for working with officials in Elizabeth Township, Forward, Elizabeth and West Elizabeth to safely reopen Bunola River Road.

“First responders are again able to get to people in need more quickly.   Special thanks to PennDOT District Engineer Cheryl Moon-Sirianni for helping to find a way to open this road while keeping safety as the top priority.

“West Penn Power also moved quickly to provide electricity to power the traffic signals. A great example of working together to get things done!”
