PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A cat is recovering after her left paw was blown up by firecrackers.

Humane Animal Rescue posted on Facebook that a group of good Samaritans brought in Pickles the cat after it had been left for dead.

When veterinarians were able to inspect her, they realized a rubber band was tied to her front paw that was used to hold the firecrackers in place.

The wound had become infected and was infested with maggots leading vets to believe the act of cruelty occurred around the Fourth of July.

“There wasn’t really any paw left. What was still there was barely hanging on by the rubber bands,” said Jamie Wilson, Director of Medical Business. “Her bone was exposed and she was severely dehydrated. I had to stop her from eating & drinking too quickly so she wouldn’t get sick.”

Vets decided the best course of action was to amputate her leg entirely.

The good Samaritans told Humane Animal Rescue, “We had to help. She was badly hurt, and we couldn’t let any animal suffer like that,” said Pickle’s finders (Kenny & Kellie). “We feel so relieved knowing that she is in good hands, and that we played a part in saving her life. We wish we could help more animals in need.”

Vets believe Pickles is 3-years-old and is expected to make a full recovery.

The Humane Animal Rescue will make her available for adoption when she is ready.
