PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The recreational use of marijuana is now legal in Canada.

However, the rules differ throughout the country.

Chris Glover, reporter for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, joined KDKA Radio on Wednesday to explain the rules for this new law.

Can you walk into a store and buy marijuana today?

“There’s about 100 stores across the country that are open, where people can actually go in bricks and mortars stores, and buy it,” Glover said.

“It’s going to be different right across the country. It’s a patch work of rules based on which province or which region you live in.”

What will the legalization of marijuana be like in Ontario?

“It’s going to be the most different of all of them. Like I mentioned, there’s are about 100 stores opening today, not one of those stores is in the province of Ontario,” Glover tells KDKA Radio.

“That’s because all of the cannabis that’s going to be sold here (Ontario), will only be able to be purchased online. That’s an important distinction for people in the states to know if they are hoping to come to Canada to make any buys themselves.”

How old do you have to be to purchase marijuana?

“In most places it matches the age for alcohol,” Glover added.

“Those kind of nuances also vary province by province.”

Can you smoke marijuana in public?

“Yes you can, depending on where you are. Sometimes it’s as little as what street you’re on. I was talking to a friend in Montreal, their rules around consumption in public are going to vary borough by borough,” said Glover.

“There are different rules, like you’d have to be 30 feet away from a park, for example, a play structure. You couldn’t do it a swimming pool. There’s all these different rules around how close you can be to certain things.”
