Online Petition Asks For Removal Of Cardinal Wuerl's Name From High School

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A petition on asking that Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School revert back to the name North Catholic has passed the original goal of 2,500 signatures and is now seeking 5,000.

The petition is asking the Diocese of Pittsburgh’s Director of Protection of Children and the principal of Cardinal Wuerl High School to remove the now Archbishop of Washington’s name from the school.

The petition says they do not want the legacy of the school to be tarnished.

“This does not deserve to have a prestigious school named after him.  This will directly impact students currently enrolled in the school, but will also impact the legacy of the school.  Not to mention, those that were hurt while he looked away.”

Wuerl’s name appears over 200 times in the Pennsylvania Diocese Victims Grand Jury Report and is critical of the way he handled reports of sexual abuse.

Asked this week if he's considered removing Cardinal Wuerl's name or other church leaders' names from diocese buildings Bishop David Zubik said, "We haven't. That's not to say we won't have some discussion on it."
