PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - In the past few days since Pittsburgh Officer Calvin Hall died after being shot in the back three times last weekend, we have heard from his fellow police officers and administrators what kind of officer and person he was, but who knows you better than a friend?

Richard Bratcher was a friend of Calvin Hall and he tells KDKA Radio’s Lynne Hayes-Freeland it has been hard dealing with the loss of his friend.

Bratcher says he worked with Hall at Shuman detention center for two years.

“I was his very first partner when he started in the workforce, and we (had) a great bond,” said Bratcher.

He adds he was supposed to meet with Hall for drinks in the upcoming days.

Bratcher says the reason he became a police officer is because he cared about his community and wanted to make a difference.

Bratcher says Hall’s goal wasn’t always to become a police officer but just wanted to do something that made a difference.

Hall believed that he could help prevent young from making it to a place like Shuman if he became a police officer and “get them before they even come to the corrections, before they go through all that, the jail system.”

Bratcher adds that Hall himself came from the streets so he knew how to talk to youth and that he was very good at what he did.

What Bratcher would like people to know the most about his friend is, “He was a great individual that really cared about the community and when people say that we need community policemen they are really talking about people like him . . . he’d rather talk to you . . . than arrest you.”

Bratcher says he would give the juvenile the opportunity to avoid jail depending on how they talked.

“If you talk tough and crazy, you’re defiantly going to jail,” said Bratcher.

He went on to say, “He had a charisma, always smiling, always friendly really soft spoken who would always give you good advice.”
