PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - As travelers across the United States prepare for summer vacations known for road trips and traffic jams, GPS signals get lost and phones die, but paper maps are forever reliable. Are you too young to know what a paper map is, much less AAA’s spiral-bound TripTik map?

Remember the excitement of flipping the page to get the navigation for upcoming miles in your TripTik from AAA? KDKA Radio's Marty Griffin remembers the 'old school' Trip Tik. Griffin says he remembers his mom pulling a page over and it would show construction cones and if she'd miss a page his dad would 'snap'  Rose, Rose we're on the wrong page, get the Trip Tik, where's the Trip Tik?

There are dozens of travel apps and services begging for drivers’ attentions but with Google Maps and Yelp giving travelers the essentials for trip planning, people don’t need another resource or smartphone app cluttering their devices to help them get from Points A to B. Griffin uses Waze a GPS navigation software that works on smartphones and tablets with GPS support. It provides turn-by-turn navigation information and user-submitted travel times and route details, while downloading location-dependent information over a mobile telephone network. Waze describes its app as a community-driven GPS navigation app, which is free to download and use. The app was first developed and popularized by Waze Mobile, an Israeli company

Marty asks his listeners if anyone uses the 'good ole'  Trip Tik.

As more tech gets introduced every day promising to make trip planning simpler it’s easy to forget about a travel company such as AAA that’s been around for years. According to AAA, they've seen a fair share of trip planning startups and apps and feel AAA’s TripTik is still the best thing to happen in this space since it’s a map personally customized for each traveler — and people actually use it.
