(Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Dog treats could be to blame for 45 cases of multidrug-resistant salmonella nationwide, including two in Pennsylvania.

The Centers for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration and state officials are investigating the outbreak they believe could be linked to pig ears.

Those affected are in 13 states, and range in age from 1 to 81.

No deaths, but a dozen people have been hospitalized.

The Tribune Review reports state health officials cannot say where the two cases are in Pennsylvania, but encourage people to wash their hands thoroughly after handling any pet food or treats.

Officials say to stop feeding your dog any pig ears.
