ROSS TWP. (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) – Tuesday’s heat made fighting a Ross Township fire even more dangerous for first responders.

15 local departments assisted in fighting the blaze that broke around 1 p.m. in the 100 block of Varney Street.

Ross-West View EMS set up a rehydration station. A dozen firefighters were treated on-scene for heat-related illnesses.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for a hand laceration and a neighbor was treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation.

No one was home at the time, but a puppy perished in the blaze.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
