PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - During a press conference on Wednesday Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said he believes Governor Tom Wolf will make an announcement on Friday pertaining to what regions of Pennsylvania will reopen.

Fitzgerald said he is “hopeful” that Southwestern PA will be on the list of areas that will soon be allowed to move into the yellow region.

If the Pittsburgh region is able to move into the yellow phase, Fitzgerald believes that will begin on May 15.

Fitzgerald said over the past 14 days the county has had half the cases that need to be met to begin to slowly reopen.

During a conference call earlier this week, Wolf said that the Southwestern region was doing a great job mitigating the spread of coronavirus.

As of Wednesday there are now 1,394 confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 in Allegheny County with 111 who have died.

Even in the yellow phase, Fitzgerald says that life will not return to normal and that there will be a “new normal”.

Places like hair and nail salons along with barbershops will remain shuttered and restaurants will not be able to have dine-in customers.

In addition, organized sports like Little League and soccer leagues will still be shut down until the area moves into the green phase of the state’s mitigation plan.

Allegheny County Health Director Dr. Debra Bogen says that while in the yellow phase, people should still continue to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Dr. Bogen adds if cases in the region begin to spike in the yellow phase, it could be forced to return to the red phase.
