PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A St. Petersburg, Florida man is dead after a shootout with police late last night in South Strabane, Washington County.

State police say a man identified as 45-year-old Steven Brooks was seen driving erratically and wouldn't pull over for traffic stop. A report says Brooks drove the wrong way on I-70 and crashed into a support column at the junction with I-79 around 11:30 p.m.

Brooks reportedly took off on foot and scaled a fence as officers chased him. They say he pulled a gun and turned towards officers, refusing to drop the weapon when officers shot him several times.

Reports says Brooks was wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of his landlord in February. Wednesday, police tried to arrest him in Alabama where he was accused of taking an elderly couple hostage. A police standoff ensued, Brooks later released the couple and escaped.
