(Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The holidays can be hard for those who have lost a love one, especially the young children and spouses of our nation’s fallen military heroes.

To give those families a little break from the pain and suffering the Gary Sinise Foundation’s “Snowball Express” sent over 1,722 children and their surviving parent or guardian to Walt Disney World this holiday season.

On the foundation’s website the actor known for playing Lt. Dan in the movie Forrest Gump said the experience helps families heal and be with those that are going through similar experiences.

"That's our primary goal," Gary explained, "for our Gold Star families to feel remembered and for them to see that they are not alone. It's something I feel is incredibly important for our nation, letting the children know that we do not forget their sacrifices and we honor them. And it's such a great feeling to see them healing, smiling, and having fun."

Since 2011 The Emmy Award winning actor’s foundation has worked to help severely wounded veterans by providing smart homes mortgage free, customized transportation as well as community outreach programs, programs that support first responders and programs like the “Snowball Express” that help Gold Star families find some relief and encourage resiliency.

The Foundation has helped local veterans Major Eric Burkett and Sgt. Doug Vitale move into smart homes that make their day-to-day life easier.

The foundation has an A plus rating from website ChairityWatch.org
