PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Giant Eagle has expanded its Fuel Perks program and launched Fuel Perks Plus.

Gas purchases will now count toward rewards, which can be used toward grocery purchases.

One perk will be earned for each dollar spent on groceries and gift cards, two perks are earned per gallon of gas and five perks for each qualifying prescription filled.

The perks can be used toward maximum rewards of 30 gallons of free gas or up to 20 percent off a grocery order with no purchase limit.

Every 500 perks will give you a dollar off each gallon of gas or 20 percent of your grocery bill.

Customers will get 10 cents off a gallon of gas or 2 percent off food per 50 perks.

Giant Eagle Spokesman, Dan Donovan tells KDKA Radio's Lynne Hayes Freeland that the  program allows customers to save on fuel while shopping in the supermarket but this new program give you more ways to earn.

“You can now earn when you’re fueling up at GetGo at the fuel pumps and we’re also going to give you more ways to redeem, so if you love getting your free fuel you can still do that today or we give you a chance to redeem those rewards instead to actually save off your next grocery trip,” said Donovan.

Donovan adds your Giant Eagle advantage card will still track your loyalty rewards.

“Now when you’re in the supermarket and you go through the checkout it will say you have this much in earnings and you can save (whatever amount you’ve earned) today, right now if you say yes, redeem.”

Donovan says it will be a seamless transition for customers, "we have transitioned the dollar off you had in fuel perk yesterday, so you still have that today and you can also redeem for 20 percent off in store".
