PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Local company GNC Holding has filed for bankruptcy protection with the aim of selling itself and close up to 1,200 stores.

The company’s effort to manage its debt load unraveled as the pandemic closed its retail locations nationwide.

GMC is looking to restriction nearly $750 million of debt.

The Chapter 11 petition allows GNC to keep operating while it restructures.

As of late last year, GNC has nearly 600 employees working at its corporate office on Wood Street Downtown.
