PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Google is unveiling updates to its Google Maps app it says will shave time off your commute.

“The average commute time for Pittsburgh specifically is about 45 minutes, a tad over the national average of 40 minutes,” according to Google Maps team member Genevieve Park.

The update incorporates a Commute Tab that constantly updates the drive into work or school. Google says it shows traffic delays due to accidents, construction or weather and also suggests real time alternative routes.

“The average American spends the equivalent of two weeks vacation time a year commuting to work,” according to a Google release. The app aims to take unpredictability out of commuting. For instance, commute time can vary an average of 25 percent in Pittsburgh. But in some cities it’s much worse. Commutes can vary 60 percent in New York City, 40 percent in the San Francisco bay area.

The updated app also integrates with transit systems and with music streaming sources such as Spotify, You Tube Music, Google Play Music and Apple Music to soothe commuters’ nerves.
