GLENSIDE, PA. (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — Pennsylvania’s Republican gubernatorial candidate faces criticism over comments made at a Wednesday town hall in Glenside.

An 18-year-old woman who identified herself as a member of an environmental activism group Sunrise Pennsylvania asked a question about Wagner’s 2017 statements suggesting body heat could be behind Earth’s warming and the financial backing he’s received from the fossil fuel industry.

The former state Sen. responded by calling the woman “young and naïve,” eliciting laughter from the crowd before asking “Are we here to elect a governor, or are we here to elect a scientist?”

The entire exchange was caught on video that quickly went viral:

Social media response was swift, including reaction from Democratic Lieutenant Governor and Braddock Mayor John Fetterman.

Wagner’s campaign has not commented on the incident.
