PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Owning a bar allows an individual to meet a lot of people and build relationships.

That was the case for long time bar owner James “Doc” Mendelson, former owner of Doc’s Place in Shadyside. The bar is now called Mario’s.

Doc would have conversations with customers about their lives, and he eventually started giving advice.

After hearing all kinds of stories from men and women, he realized he had enough information to write a book – so he did.

He does not tell people what to do, he tells them what is most likely going to happen;

"If you tell me what you’re planning on doing, this is probably how the scenario is going to play out."

Doc is not a doctor, however he did take a few psychology classes at the University of Michigan.

He believes a lot of people don’t understand professionals, so he is there to break down a person’s situation and make it easier for him or her.

"Freud is not really something that the everyday person gets. What they get is apples and oranges. My goal is to turn things into apples and oranges," Doc said.

By making things easier, Doc thinks more people will understand how the opposite sex works. He tells KDKA Radio,

“This book will teach women, how men think. This book will teach men, how women think, and they think completely differently.”

In 2011, Doc sold his bar. What was the reason?

"The interpersonal relationships that I loved working with in the bar-restaurant business was gone. One of my last days, there were four young women sitting at the corner of the bar and they were all texting," said Doc.

That’s when Doc new it was time to move on.
