Reverend Jesse Jackson has known the late Aretha Franklin for more than 60 years. They've seen a lot together in their 6 decades of friendship- from the death of Martin Luther King Jr. to Franklin's rise to fame.

The reverend was able to visit her the day before she died. "We prayed twice together only yesterday," he said, "and I felt the warmth of her hands.

WWJ Newsradio 950 in Detroit interviewed him about their relationship and the importance of her legacy. Jackson joked that he'll remember her incredible cooking most of all.

Besides her skills in the kitchen, he lauded her social activism, especially when she helped fundraise for Dr. King, despite adversity. "She never gave up," he said. "She was a fighter."

"My heart is heavy today, but I rejoice in the nearly 60 years of living with Aretha," he said.

Aretha Franklin died at the age of 76.
