PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - KDKA Radio’s Marty Griffin’s sporadic absences have been noticed by his listeners and fans.

Monday on the KDKA Radio Morning News he revealed why he missed two weeks in August and other days here and there.

“Had a lump under the right side of my chin [in early August], had one of my neighbors, who is a surgeon come over and found the lump and said ‘this is a problem’”, said Griffin. "I am HPV positive. I have Squamous Cell Cancer."

"On Tuesday September 4,  I began immunotherapy.  Tuesday I start chemo/radiation. It’s a three month process," Griffin said.

So why is Marty sharing this personal story? He said he wants to save lives.

"90 million Americans are HPV positive. 15 million new cases each year," he continued. "There is a vaccine. It’s 100 percent effective. It MUST be administered to kids before they’re sexually active, before they turn 14."

Griffin said, "Parents freak out. They’re running from the vaccine for their kids, the connotation suggesting too much sexual activity."

"There is a 600 percent increase in HPV related cancers. The expert calls it an epidemic. By telling this story, by bringing in experts, by raising awareness, by pointing our HPV vaccine opportunities we can SAVE lives."

“I’m going to do all this stuff live on my own. I want people to see this journey . . . look I’m not telling you what to do, I’m just telling you to do a little reading to imagine someday your daughter or your  son is going to be going through this and you can avoid this with this vaccine and that’s why I’m doing this,” said Griffin.

You can follow Marty’s fight on KDKA Radio and his new website Sparkt.com where he will go live everyday so people “can see the journey.
