PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Local Republicans are reacting after two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump were passed by the House Judiciary Committee.

It is the first time in two decades that the House Judiciary Committee has approved articles of impeachment against a sitting president (Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress).

The vote passed along party lines 23 to 17.

One of those 17 was local Republican Rep. Guy Reschenthaler.

“Judiciary Democrats realize they can’t beat President Trump on the merits, so they caved to their radical base and rushed through baseless articles of impeachment in record time,” said Reschenthaler in a statement. “Democrats have no evidence to support their charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. If this case had come before me when I was serving as a district judge, I would have dismissed it at the preliminary hearing for lack of merit.”

Reschenthaler also claims Democrats are doing nothing and are wasting the American people’s money and time.

Republican Rep. Mike Kelly made the following statement after Friday’s House Judiciary vote:

"Democrats have made it crystal clear all along that this impeachment inquiry isn't about protecting the Constitution or upholding their oath of office. This is about political vengeance and damaging the president ahead of the 2020 election. I have opposed this effort since it began and will vote against both articles of impeachment on the House floor."

When the matter reaches the full House, seven of nine Democrats from Pennsylvania will support the articles of impeachment against President Trump. The other two won't say how they'll vote. All nine Republicans from PA will vote against the articles.

A vote on the house floor could happen next Wednesday.
