PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A man is recovering after being rescued from a garbage truck early Monday morning.

A Republic Services garbage truck driver called police shortly after 3:30 a.m. to report a man stuck in the back of the vehicle on the 2100 block of Brownsville Road.

The driver told police he was emptying a garbage dumpster into the back of his truck when he thought he could hear screaming, “but he emptied it and brought it back to the ground when he started hearing louder screams.”

The driver then got out of the truck and found the male inside the back of the truck and called 911 because he could not get the man out by himself.

Firefighters arrived and were able to rescue the man.

The man said he had lost track of the friend he was with the night before and needed a place to sleep so he hopped in the dumpster.

The man was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital to be treated for minor injuries to his face and knee.
