PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Marty Griffin’s long journey battling cancer hit a major milestone Monday.

The host of KDKA Radio’s “The Inside Story” received his final radiation treatment and rang the bell at UPMC Hillman’s Cancer Center to mark his victory over cancer.

Holding his wife Kristine’s hand, Griffin walked down the hallway toward the bell surrounded by nurses and other medical staff to celebrate his final treatment.

Wearing socks while he made his trek, Griffin joked he felt so comfortable at the Cancer Center he didn’t need to wear shoes.

Before Griffin rang the bell, he read the words on the plaque next to the bell that say:

I ring this bell in triumph; this course of Chemo is complete. I ring this bell in triumph since this was not an easy feat.

“This bell rings with strength, through this nearly unbearable plight. This bell rings with strength and hope for all continuing to fight.

After ringing the bell, Griffin was showered with confetti and he took time to thank the UPMC staff.

“I’ve never in my life met such magnificent people. I can’t imagine how you do it every day. I can’t imagine the joy and the grief and the pain and the struggle that people go through right in front on you and how you manage it like superstars every day.”

The doctors say they cannot see the tumor at the base of Marty's tounge after seven weeks of chemo, radiation and immunotherapy but won't be sure of success for about three months.

Griffin decided to make his fight public after he discovered his form of cancer, caused by the HPV virus, can now be prevented with a vaccination.

On his website Sparkt, Griffin and his team have gathered useful information for parents so they can help protect their children and future generation from HPV-related cancer.

KDKA Radio expects Griffin to return to the air Monday. We hope you’ll join us at 9 a.m. to celebrate his return.
