PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Pittsburgh officials say they know all about it. In fact they were involved in planning for Department of Defense military helicopters and personnel training in and around town for the past week and a half. Fans at the Pirates game Tuesday night saw Blackhawk helicopters flying low near PNC Park.

“They are doing operations not just in the city but around different parts of Western Pennsylvania,” according to Mayor Bill Peduto.

The mayor says there is an added benefit. SWAT team and other officers have been included in some of the training. “Our officers get the benefit of being trained by the world’s very best,” says Peduto.

The mayor isn’t disclosing the exact nature of the operations or where they occur. “If you see a Blackhawk in the sky understand that that’s somebody who’s protecting this country overseas who’s getting trained in Pittsburgh to make sure they can do their job,” said Peduto.
