PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The votive boxes, used to collect money so people can light a candle at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Oakland were broken into recently.

The parish said in a Facebook post “It is a reminder that everyone in our parishes needs to be vigilant in watching for suspicious behavior and to respond immediately by calling 911.”

Father Nick Vaskov with the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese tells KDKA Radio’s Lynne Hayes-Freeland that it can cause anger but says he is thankful nobody was hurt and that the candle holders and votive box can be easily replaces.

“But we also pray for these folks because whatever would lead someone to go to such lengths for what would be a pretty small sum of money, whatever needs to be healed in their heart we also pray for them too,” said Vaskov.

Vaskov says the boxes don’t hold much money and are emptied regularly.

The diocese considers St. Paul’s a “refuge” in the middle of a busy Oakland neighborhood, so they plan to leave their doors open but are not ignorant to the need for safety.

“There have been for many years, security guards who are there during the mass times when the church has a good number of people there so that will continue,” said Vaskov. “Also since the tragedy at Tree of Life I think every house of worship has been looking at ways to remain secure. You don’t want to live in fear of something happening but at the same time to be prepared for whatever may come.”

Vaskov says they want to makes sure people have a safe place to worship but doesn’t think most people want to line up for metal detectors to get into a church.

If you have any information on who was behind the burglary please contact Pittsburgh Police.
