Multiple Incumbents Lose To New Comers In Primary Election

There will be new faces in City and Council Council

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Darlene Harris' 12-year run as a Pittsburgh City Council member is over.

She lost Tuesday's primary vote to Bobby Wilson in the District 1 race.

 Wilson had the backing of Mayor Bill Peduto.

 In another upset, Allegheny County Council President John DeFazio lost his re-election bid to Bethany Hallam.

Another incumbent also lost to a new comer. In District 13 activist Olivia Bennett beat out Denise Ranalli Russell.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald who is running for re-election was unopposed and took 98.2 percent of the vote. He told KDKA Radio the upsets are due to a changing population.

“The North Side changed over city council and county council (Tuesday) night for younger more progressive candidates and I think that’s talked about, a changing demographic of what Pittsburgh is becoming,” said Fitzgerald

No upset in the Allegheny County DA's race, where Stephen Zappalla turned away a challenge by Turahn Jenkins.

Turnout was low, only 16 percent of registered voters participated in Tuesday’s election.
