PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer and pool season and the Allegheny County Parks are making improvements at many of the parks.

Parks Director Andy Baechle told the KDKA Radio News Tuesday the North Park Pool will spotlight something new this season.

“We have a 130 foot inflatable obstacle or challenge course. I think all ages can have fun on it. You miss, you fall in the water, and you cool off. ”

It looks like an American Ninja Warrior type of course; Baechle adds this attraction is a way to attract more people.

“I think kids like high stimulation. We find our wave pools traditionally do more attendance than the North Park Pool which is just a traditional square swimming pool,” said Baechle.

North Park is not the only pool in Allegheny County that is making some upgrades.

“We put new features in Deer Lakes, a bathroom and extended playground,” Baechle said.

The South Park Wave Pool has also been upgraded for the summer.

“The wave pools we have are first generation wave pools.  So the parts are so old that when something wears out you can’t get a new one,” Baechle added.

With new wave generation equipment, the waves should be even better than ever.

Allegheny County will also be in charge of the 19th hole, a concession with food and beverage at both North and South Park. Before this year, it was a third party operation.

Also every week during the summer free concerns will be held at South Park and Hartwood Acres.

“A free concert every Friday night at South Park, and a free concert every Sunday at Hartwood,” said Baechle.
