September 19, 2018 - 10:23 am

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — 69 new buses started rolling into Allegheny County Wednesday.

The Port Authority says it will start putting the new vehicles into service over the coming weeks as part of a replacement program.

They'll replace buses that are at least 12 years old due to be retired.

They feature driver safety improvements, an improved external audio system and larger tail lights for better visibility.

Each 40-foot Gillig bus cost $460,000. The $32.3 million investment was covered in part by a $3.6 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration’s Bus and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program.
