PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) – The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office reports that there were 80 more overdose deaths last year than in 2016, but there’s good news.

In the report released Monday, the M.E. says overdose deaths peaked in the final quarter of 2016 and have been progressively dropping since then.

The decrease is attributed to increased availability and use of Narcan, and collaborative efforts among county departments, public safety agencies and community groups.

Almost all of the 735 overdose deaths last year were caused by drug mixtures and data shows an increase in fentanyl-related substances.
