PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Author Stephen Chbosky visited his alma mater of Upper St. Clair High School while in Pittsburgh on a book tour for his most recent young adult novel “Imaginary Friend.”

Chbosky is best known for his novel “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” which follows the story of a high school student in Pittsburgh.

A movie based on the novel was filmed in Pittsburgh and starred Logan Lerman and Emma Watson.

Born in Pittsburgh and a 1988 graduate of Upper St. Clair High School, Chbosky met with 30 students from the school to answer questions on his career and writing process.

“When Steven reached out to us, indicating that he wanted Upper St. Clair High School to be a key place on his book tour in Pittsburgh, we were reminded that the K-12 school environment that we create for students leaves a lifelong impression and must be nurtured with care,” Upper St. Clair High School Principal Dr. Timothy Wagner said in a press release issused by the school district.

One piece of advice Chbosky gave the students was the importance of patience.

“Develop your voice. Be kind to yourself. It’s really hard to write a great novel at 18," Chbosky was quoted as saying in the release. "Hang in there until you have your moment.”
