PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The next leg of the PA Turnpike's Southern Beltway has received the green light.

The turnpike has awarded a 37.8 million dollar contract to Trumbull Corporation to built a 1.7 mile stretch of the road from Route 50 to I-79. Otherwise known as the 55C1-2 section.

Turnpike Spokeswoman Renee Colburn telling us, the state must still approve the deal.

"As soon as that takes place, which hopefully is in the next couple of weeks, we will get started with an actual community meeting in that area so people are aware of what kind of construction will be taking place" Said Colburn

She adds the entire project as a whole remains on schedule, despite all the rough weather.

"We only have about three more sections to put out to bid, construction keeps moving on the other sections. and we hope to have everything finshed on the Sourthern Beltway by 2021" said Colburn.

When completed, the entire 13-mile stretch will connect The Parkway West near the Airport to Interstate 79 in Cecil Township.
