HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) — You wouldn’t know it by the weather, but state officials say it’s time to prepare for winter.

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission CEO Mark Compton says crews always see two things in the first winter storm:

"You’re going to have empty trailers stuck and you’re going to have folks with bad tires stuck, it’s just the way of life," said Compton. "So understand taking the time here in October, maybe spend a little time on it this weekend."

"Please, we beg you, get your tires checked."

It’s also a good idea to test car batteries and toss an emergency kit in your vehicle before temperatures get too cold.

Once the snow arrives, drivers can help crews by staying off the roads if possible, making it easier for trucks to clear roadways. If you’re looking to help even more, hundreds of jobs are available across the state for the winter.

Motorists can check road conditions 24/7 at 511PA.
