Officials Determine 6-Year-Old Playing With Matches Responsible For 5 Alarm Oakland Blaze

Nearly 80 people have were displaced in the fire

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Investigators believe they have pinpointed what caused a 5-alarm fire in Oakland on Saturday.

A Fire Investigation Unit, composed of members of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire and Pittsburgh Police Detective,s interviewed a 6-year-old boy who admitted that he used matches to light a fire in the laundry room located on the second floor of the apartment.

No criminal charges will be filed for the blaze that took place on Deraud Place in Uptown/ West Oakland.

“The boy and his family have been referred to the County Child Line where they will direct them toward any available services and provide the child with the help he needs,” a release said.

The fire displaced nearly 80 people and a temporary shelter has been set up at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center to help those affected.

Two firefighters were treated for minor smoke inhalation during the blaze.
