WASHINGTON, D.C. (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) — The bipartisan Opioid Crisis Response Act of 2018 passed the U.S. Senate Monday by a vote of 99-1.

The bill aims to combat the misuse of opioids and other addictive drugs.

It would increase scrutiny of arriving international mail and require packaging opioids in limited amounts. The bill also includes funding for treatment centers and training, and protections for children and families impacted by addiction.

The government estimates that over 72,000 people died from drug overdoses last year — double the 36,000 who died in 2008.
