UNIONTOWN, Pa. (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Republican Party of Pennsylvania is requesting that the Fayette County District Attorney and Elections Bureau investigate tactics used by Fayette Co. Democrats that the GOP says will persuade voters to register as Democrats or switch party affiliation to Democrat.

According to a PA GOP release, the Democrats were promising prizes at the Fayette County Fair that included Steelers merchandise and a trip to Nemacolin Woodlands if they “register to vote as or change party affiliation to Democrat."

PA GOP chairman Val DiGiorgio said in the statement:

“We are requesting this investigation not only because of the apparently flagrant violation of state election law, but also to ensure the voter registration process remains untainted desperate actors seeking to gain an unfair—and potentially illegal—advantage."

“It is my hope that an investigation will be underway shortly, this problem will be corrected, and those responsible held accountable.”

After it was discovered it might not be legal, the Fayette Co. Dem. Chairman says they expanded the promotion to everyone, and then the giveaway was canceled entirely.

The Steelers gear was purchased by the Fayette Co. Democratic Party and the trip to Nemacolin was donated. It was not from the resort.

The County election’s office is investigating.
