PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - At a public hearing today in Wilkinsburg, Democratic state lawmakers grilled police officials about background checks for cops and whether they provide cultural diversity training.

Many departments across Pennsylvania say they don't have enough funding or manpower.

Representative Dom Costa says low salaries can impact recruitment.  Some part-time officers work for two or three different departments to make ends meet.

“No one is tracking how many hours these officers are putting in because they’re not getting paid a substantial amount of money and they’re trying to make a living for their families, so these are some of the things we really have to look at.”

Representative Ed Gainey called for today's hearing in response to the police shooting of Antwon Rose.
