SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Nearly 20 years after a ten-year-old girl was abducted from a street the village of Cairnbrook and raped, State Police have made an arrest. Timothy David Nelson, 50, of Cumberland, Maryland was taken in Tuesday and is in the Somerset County jail on $750,000 bond.

Pennsylvania Trooper Jeff Brock has been investigating the case since the girl was abducted in September of 1999. In 2004 DNA evidence linked the Somerset kidnapping to two unsolved kidnappings in Hagerstown, Maryland. Then late last year, Brock says an FBI agent ran fingerprints and DNA through newer technology and was able to make a match to Nelson.

“It’s not about me, it’s about bringing closure to the girls. They move on, they have their lives that they lead, but I just have a hard time believing that they weren’t thinking, ‘Where did he ever go? Is he still alive? Is he dead? Where does he live? Does he live down the street from me or does he live thousands of miles away,’” said Brock.

Authorities believe that because the attacks were so far apart in time there are probably others. They’re encouraging other agencies with unsolved kidnappings to contact them.

“I’ve been carrying this around for more than 19 years,” said Brock. “I had to try one more thing.”
