PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Pennsylvania State Representative Jake Wheatley is making an economic argument for his pending legislation to legalize marijuana for recreational use in Pennsylvania.

Wheatley's argument is primarily economic. And he says the majority of Pennsylvania residents support it.

“I think they believe we’re ready. I think the economic benefits, as the Auditor General said; it could be a $580 million boom to the commonwealth.

The Democrat out of the 19th District tells the KDKA Radio Morning News the nine other states and District of Columbia that have legalized pot show it can be done safely.

“All of the positives that you see from Colorado or you see from other states that have gone to full recreational legalization should be indicators for Pennsylvania.”

He adds he would have protections to guard against underage marijuana use. He also wants criminal records expunged for past marijuana convictions that would be legal under a new law.
