Peduto Joins Call for Pittsburgh Marathon to Drop Chick-fil-A

Says Other Sponsors Would Have Less Baggage.

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto is lending his voice to the call for the Pittsburgh Marathon to cancel Chick-fil-A’s sponsorship of the Pittsburgh Kids Marathon. An online petition accuses the fast food chain of being “openly homophobic and transphobic.” Several years ago the son of the chain’s founder made comments about gay marriage and in support of conservative family foundations.

When asked about the petition campaign, Peduto said he hadn’t seen it but supported replacing Chick-fil-A. “We are well past the days of acceptance and way past days of tolerance. We’re at the days of full welcoming and I think the sponsors should reflect that,” said Peduto. I would ask (the marathon) to reconsider the thought process. I’m sure that there are other companies, both locally and nationally, that would prefer to be associated with the Pittsburgh Marathon.”

Marathon officials did not have a specific response to the mayor’s criticism. They earlier released a statement reading in part, “As an organization, P3R strives to be inclusive of any and all members of the Pittsburgh community, and we have and continue to be accepting of any individual or family who wants to participate in our events.”

A marketing representative for Chick-fil-A told the Post-Gazette the company, “does not have a political or social agenda.”

The 2019 Pittsburgh Marathon is scheduled to run May 4 and 5.
