Penguins Playoff Games Bring Millions To Local Economy

Big wins for the Pens means big bucks for Pittsburgh businesses

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Penguins are looking for some big wins in this year's NHL playoffs and local tourism officials are hoping to do big business as well.

Sports Pittsburgh, the sports tourism arm of Visit Pittsburgh, says each Penguins playoff game brings in more than $4 million to the region.

Executive Director Jennifer Hawkins tells KDKA Radio’s Larry and John the longer the playoff run the better.

“When we made our last run in 2017 with I think 13 games, we were just under $60 million of direct spending back into our local community.”

Hawkins adds millions come from out of town that would not have been spent elsewhere.

“Not moving money from going to the movies or going to a restaurant or to the entertainment district,” said Hawkins. “They are bringing it in from another community and putting it in to ours.”

She says big games also raise awareness to the area.

“For someone to relocate to the community, first they’re a visitor,” said Hawkins. “No one goes and moves their company or even their families to a community that they’ve never heard of or seen before.”

Hawkins says the NCAA wrestling championship in March brought in $10 million; the Dick’s Pittsburgh Marathon brings in $13 a year.
